"U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, says he was dismayed that Congress passed the war supplemental appropriations bill so easily last week.

“An economic collapse seems to be the goal of Congress and this administration,” Paul said during his weekly radio address Monday.

“Washington spends with impunity, domestically bailing and nationalizing basically everything they can get their hands on,” Paul said.

Mocking the idea that Obama was a “peace candidate,” Paul pointed out that hisadministration will be sending another $106 billion it doesn't have "to continue the bloodshed in Afghanistan and Iraq without a hint of a plan to bring American troops home."

Paul noted that many of his congressional colleagues who previously voted with him in opposition to every war supplemental request under the Bush administration seem to have changed their tune. He maintains that a vote to fund the war is a vote in favor of the war.
“Congress exercises its constitutional prerogatives through the power of the purse,” Paul said. “As long as Congress continues to enable these dangerous interventions abroad, there is no end in sight: that is until we face total economic collapse.”

Paul noted that, as Americans struggle through the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, the foreign aid and International Monetary Fund appropriations in the spending bill passed last week can be called an international bailout:

The emergency supplemental appropriations bill sends:

$660 million to Gaza

$555 million to Israel

$310 million to Egypt

$300 million to Jordan

$420 million to Mexico

$889 million to the United Nations for so-called “peace-keeping” missions

$1 billion overseas to address the global financial crisis outside U.S. borders

$8 billion to address a potential pandemic flu, which he said could result in mandatory
vaccinations “for no discernable reason other than to enrich the pharmaceutical companies.”

Perhaps most outrageous, Paul said, is the $108 billion loan guarantee to the IMF.
“These new loan guarantees will allow that destructive organization to continue spending taxpayer money to prop up corrupt leaders and promote harmful economic policies overseas. Not only does sending American taxpayer money to the IMF hurt citizens here, evidence shows that it even hurts those it pretends to help.”
Paul said that IMF loans require policy changes called “structural adjustment” programs, which amount to “forced Keynesianism.”
“This is the very fantasy-infused economic model that has brought our own country to its knees,” Paul said, “and IMF loans act as the Trojan horse to inflict it on others."
Leaders in recipient nations tend to become more concerned with the wishes of international needs than the needs of their own people, he said.
“Argentina and Kenya are just two examples of countries that followed IMF mandates right off a cliff. The IMF frequently recommends currency devaluations to poorer nations, which has wiped out the already impoverished over and over.”

Paul noted a long list of brutal dictators the IMF happily supported and propped up with loans that left their oppressed populaces with staggering amounts of debt with no economic progress to show for it.

The continued presence of U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan does not make America safer at home but, in fact, undermines national security, he said.
“We are buying nothing but evil and global oppression by sending [our] taxpayer dollars to the IMF — not to mention there is no constitutional authority to do so.”

Our campaign has stirred the sleeping giant by showing millions that freedom, peace, and prosperity are achievable. We know that these things can come about only through sound money, limited government and a respect for the inherent rights of every individual. We have awakened the political class to the popularity and viability of Liberty. And, most of all, we have awoken within ourselves a spirit of freedom and independence that cannot be suppressed by any ruler, army, or philosophy of subservience and fear.

However, alternate candidates Chuck Baldwin, Cynthia McKinney, and Ralph Nader agree with Ron Paul on four key principles central to the health of our nation. We Agree

Foreign Policy: The Iraq War must end as quickly as possible with removal of all our soldiers from the region. We must initiate the return of our soldiers from around the world, including Korea, Japan, Europe and the entire Middle East. We must cease the war propaganda, threats of a blockade and plans for attacks on Iran, nor should we re-ignite the cold war with Russia over Georgia. Wemust reject the notion and practice of torture, eliminations of habeas corpus, secret tribunals, and secret prisons. We must deny immunity for corporations that spy willingly on the people for the benefit of the government. We must reject the unitary presidency, the illegal use of signing statements and excessive use of executive orders.

The National Debt: We believe that there should be no increase in the national debt. The burden of debt placed on the next generation is unjust and already threatening our economy and the value of our dollar. We must pay our bills as we go along and not unfairly place this burden on a future generation.

The Federal Reserve: We seek a thorough investigation, evaluation and audit of the Federal Reserve System and its cozy relationships with the banking, corporate, and other financial institutions. The arbitrary power to create money and credit out of thin air behind closed doors for the benefit of commercial interests must be ended. There should be no taxpayer bailouts of corporations and no corporate subsidies. Corporations should be aggressively prosecuted for their crimes and frauds.

The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to the doctrinaire and academic thinkers. Instead the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can ‘throw the rascals out’ at any election without leading to any profound or extensive shifts in policy.

The coverage of the presidential election is designed to be a grand distraction. This is not new, but this year, it’s more so than ever.

Pretending that a true difference exists between the two major candidates is a charade of great proportion. Many who help to perpetuate this myth are frequently unaware of what they are doing and believe that significant differences actually do exist. Indeed, on small points there is the appearance of a difference. The real issues, however, are buried in a barrage of miscellaneous nonsense and endless pontifications by robotic pundits hired to perpetuate the myth of a campaign of substance.

The truth is that our two-party system offers no real choice. The real goal of the campaign is to distract people from considering the real issues.

Influential forces, the media, the government, the privileged corporations and moneyed interests see to it that both party’s candidates are acceptable, regardless of the outcome, since they will still be in charge. It’s been that way for a long time. George Wallace was not the first to recognize that there’s “not a dime’s worth of difference” between the two parties. There is, though, a difference between the two major candidates and the candidates on third-party tickets and those running as independents.

The two parties and their candidates have no real disagreements on foreign policy, monetary policy, privacy issues, or the welfare state. They both are willing to abuse the Rule of Law and ignore constitutional restraint on Executive Powers. Neither major party champions free markets and private-property ownership.

Those candidates who represent actual change or disagreement with the status quo are held in check by the two major parties in power, making it very difficult to compete in the pretend democratic process. This is done by making it difficult for third-party candidates to get on the ballots, enter into the debates, raise money, avoid being marginalized, or get fair or actual coverage. A rare celebrity or a wealthy individual can, to a degree, overcome these difficulties.

The system we have today allows a President to be elected by as little as 32% of the American people, with half of those merely voting for the “lesser of two evils”. Therefore, as little as 16% actually vote for a president. No wonder when things go wrong, anger explodes. A recent poll shows that 60% of the American people are not happy with the two major candidates this year.

This system is driven by the conviction that only a major party candidate can win. Voters become convinced that any other vote is a “wasted” vote. It’s time for that conclusion to be challenged and to recognize that the only way not to waste one’s vote is to reject the two establishment candidates and join the majority, once called silent, and allow the voices of the people to be heard.

We cannot expect withdrawal of troops from Iraq or the Middle East with either of the two major candidates. Expect continued involvement in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Georgia. Neither hints of a non-interventionist foreign policy. Do not expect to hear the rejection of the policy of supporting the American world empire. There will be no emphasis in protecting privacy and civil liberties and the constant surveillance of the American people. Do not expect any serious attempt to curtail the rapidly expanding national debt. And certainly, there will be no hint of addressing the Federal Reserve System and its cozy relationship with big banks and international corporations and the politicians.

There is only one way that these issues can get the attention they deserve: the silent majority must become the vocal majority.

This message can be sent to our leaders by not participating in the Great Distraction—the quadrennial campaign and election of an American President without a choice. Just think of how much of an edge a Vice President has in this process, and he or she is picked by a single person—the party’s nominee. This was never intended by the Constitution.

Since a principled non-voter sends a message, we must count them and recognize the message they are sending as well. The non-voters need to hold their own “election” by starting a “League of Non-voters” and explain their principled reasons for opting out of this charade of the presidential elective process. They just might get a bigger membership than anyone would guess.

Write-in votes should not be discouraged, but the electoral officials must be held accountable and make sure the votes are counted. But one must not be naïve and believe that under today’s circumstances one has a chance of accomplishing much by a write-in campaign.

The strongest message can be sent by rejecting the two-party system, which in reality is a one-party system with no possible chance for the changes to occur which are necessary to solve our economic and foreign policy problems. This can be accomplished by voting for one of the non-establishment principled candidates—Baldwin, Barr, McKinney, Nader, and possibly others. (listed alphabetically)

Yes, these individuals do have strong philosophic disagreements on various issues, but they all stand for challenging the status quo—those special interest who control our federal government. And because of this, on the big issues of war, civil liberties, deficits, and the Federal Reserve they have much in common. People will waste their vote in voting for the lesser of two evils. That can’t be stopped overnight, but for us to have an impact we must maximize the total votes of those rejecting the two major candidates.

For me, though, my advice—for what it’s worth—is to vote! Reject the two candidates who demand perpetuation of the status quo and pick one of the alternatives that you have the greatest affinity to, based on the other issues.

A huge vote for those running on principle will be a lot more valuable by sending a message that we’ve had enough and want real change than wasting one’s vote on a supposed lesser of two evils

No matter what the arguments may be, this policy is new; and it will have ramifications for our future, and it will have ramifications for the future of the world because other countries will adopt this same philosophy."

Does Balkanization Beckon Anew?

When the Great War comes, said old Bismarck, it will come out of “some damn fool thing in the Balkans.”

On June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip shot the archduke and heir to the Austrian throne Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, setting in motion the train of events that led to the First World War.

In the spring of 1999, the United States bombed Serbia for 78 days to force its army out of that nation’s cradle province of Kosovo. The Serbs were fighting Albanian separatists of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). And we had no more right to bomb Belgrade than the Royal Navy would have had to bombard New York in our Civil War.

We bombed Serbia, we were told, to stop the genocide in Kosovo. But there was no genocide. This was propaganda. The United Nations’ final casualty count of Serbs and Albanians in Slobodan Milosevic’s war did not add up to 1 percent of the dead in Mr. Lincoln’s war.

Albanians did flee in the tens of thousands during the war. But since that war’s end, the Serbs of Kosovo have seen their churches and monasteries smashed and vandalized and have been ethnically cleansed in the scores of thousands from their ancestral province. In the exodus they have lost everything. The remaining Serb population of 120,000 is largely confined to enclaves guarded by NATO troops.

“At a Serb monastery in Pec,” writes the Washington Post, “Italian troops protect the holy site, which is surrounded by a massive new wall to shield elderly nuns from stone-throwing and other abuse by passing ethnic Albanians.”

On Sunday, Kosovo declared independence and was recognized by the European Union and President Bush. But this is not the end of the story. It is only the preface to a new history of the Balkans, a region that has known too much history.

By intervening in a civil war to aid the secession of an ancient province, to create a new nation that has never before existed and, to erect it along ethnic, religious and tribal lines, we have established a dangerous precedent. Muslim and Albanian extremists are already talking of a Greater Albania, consisting of Albania, Kosovo and the Albanian-Muslim sectors of Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia.

If these Albanian minorities should demand the right to secede and join their kinsmen in Kosovo, on what grounds would we oppose them? The inviolability of borders? What if the Serb majority in the Mitrovica region of northern Kosovo, who reject Albanian rule, secede and call on their kinsmen in Serbia to protect them?

Would we go to war against Serbia, once again, to maintain the territorial integrity of Kosovo, after we played the lead role in destroying the territorial integrity of Serbia?

Inside the U.S.-sponsored Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the autonomous Serb Republic of Srpska is already talking secession and unification with Serbia. On what grounds would we deny them?

The U.S. war on Serbia was unconstitutional, unjust and unwise. Congress never authorized it. Serbia, an ally in two world wars, had never attacked us. We made an enemy of the Serbs, and alienated Russia, to create a second Muslim state in the Balkans.

By intervening in a civil war where no vital interest was at risk, the United States, which is being denounced as loudly in Belgrade today as we are being cheered in Pristina, has acquired another dependency. And our new allies, the KLA, have been credibly charged with human trafficking, drug dealing, atrocities and terrorism.

And the clamor for ethnic self-rule has only begun to be heard.

Rumania has refused to recognize the new Republic of Kosovo, for the best of reasons. Bucharest rules a large Hungarian minority in Transylvania, acquired at the same Paris Peace Conference of 1919 where Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina were detached from Vienna and united with Serbia.

Abkhazia and South Ossetia, two provinces that have broken away from Georgia, are invoking the Kosovo precedent to demand recognition as independent nations. As our NATO expansionists are anxious to bring Georgia into NATO, here is yet another occasion for a potential Washington-Moscow clash.

Spain, too, opposed the severing of Kosovo from Serbia, as Madrid faces similar demands from Basque and Catalan separatists.

The Muslim world will enthusiastically endorse the creation of a new Muslim state in Europe at the expense of Orthodox Christian Serbs. But Turkey is also likely to re-raise the issue as to why the EU and United States do not formally recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Like Kosovo, it, too, is an ethnically homogeneous community that declared independence 25 years ago.

Breakaway Transneistria is seeking independence from Moldova, the nation wedged between Rumania and Ukraine, and President Putin of Russia has threatened to recognize it, Abkhazia and South Ossetia in retaliation for the West’s recognition of Kosovo.

If Putin pauses, it will be because he recognizes that of all the nations of Europe, Russia is high among those most threatened by the serial Balkanization we may have just reignited in the Balkans.

somewhere along the way tho, we have drifted away from the constitution. and we as conservatives, especially the conservatives running the republican party, we have drifted a long way from the positions we used to hold of limited government. and this is waht we have to talk about. we have to talk about what conservatives stand for and what we should be doing. because we're goin in the wrong direction. there's not a whole lotta time left. becuz if we continue what we're doing we're goin got have a financial crisis becuz you can't continue to spend too much. because there's limit on how much you can tax, and we're taxed to the hilt. and then there's a limit to how much borrowing you can do and we're borrowing to the hilt.

we're dependent on china, and saudi arabia and all these countries because we are the greatest debtor in the whole world today. this is diffrerent than 1970's when we had to pay for guns and butter. today we're paying for guns and butter again, but today our good jobs are overseas we owe 2.7T$ the whole country is in debt and what do we do now when we need more government? we print more money. what is the bail out package all about? our side of the aisle proposes it and the democrats wants to increase it. 150b? NO let's up it 50 to 200B? where does it come from? the govt has no money. well can you tax people? no you can't tax anymore. what are they gonna do they're gonna print the money. devalue the dollar and that's the problem we have. the dollar is low. prices are high. the people are suffering. the middle class is shrinking. so we offer the same ole pile, the same ole baloney. and then we turn around and say "well y don't we ask the federal reserve to create more money. nobody seems to have enough money. if we just had more money. maybe it would prop up the stock market." so we go to the federal reserve the badge of the federal reserve and the market and say we need more money. so they crank it out. they lower interest rates. you can't lower interest rates unless you print more money.

so they lower interest rates DRAMATICALLY, like never before. stock market goes up 200points an hour later they realize it didn't do any good, and the stock market drops 200 points. so we're in a bind. we're in a fix and i'll tell you where we overspend. EVERYWHERE. we spend too much EVERYWHERE. (APPLAUSE) this means we spend too much money overseas. we spend too much domestically. and we don't produce like we used to. so therefore the only answer is to be truly conservative. and to be truly conservative you have to truly take your oath of office seriously - that is obey the constitution. BUT we as republicans and conservatives we finally got control of government. 1994, matter of fact, was an exciting year. because it was the year I thought I might like to go back to congress. I'd been in for four terms in the 70's and early 80's. Was out and went back to medicine, delivered babies. And uh, 1994 I thought well this country's getting serious. We've you know, We've changed the Congress. I'm going back. I'm goin back to help. So I got back in and was sworn in again in 1997 and was hopeful. Year 2000 again hopeful. The Senate, the house and the presidency. But what have we done?

Have we lost our way or what? I mean, remember the old days? The old Reagan days when we used to say get rid of the department of Education! That's what we ought to be doing. () So when we got our chance what did we do? We doubled the size of the Department of Education. We put No Child Left behind. We did all these things. we've lost credibility. and now we're losing house seats. we've lost control of the house and senate. and right now it looks like we're going to lose even more. and it's not because we are not compassionate, it's because we're not conservative that we're losing. that's how we won before.

but now, now we have a candidate running for president, who's leading the charge. one of his best friends is Feingold, campaign finance reform. (boo) another good friend of this leading candidate his name, his good friend's name is Kennedy - on Immigration. (BOO) and then also his old time friend he's not in the senate right now Sen. Daschle. Sen Daschle used to be his good friend on taxes to INCREASE taxes not lower taxes. We need Lower taxes. (applause)

So...And now our leading candidate, guess who's position he holds on global warming - Al Gore. He supports the Al Gore bill on global warming.

So if you think we can lead this country back to conservative principles, fiscal soundness, and a decent size government, you have another thought coming cuz it's not going to happen. And therefore we have to start thinking about like conservatives thought, once again. That is what we have to do. We have to know what conservatives think about.

You know on the right to life issue. I believe - I'm a real stickler for civil liberties. I believe that libert is the most important thing cuz if we have our liberties, we have our freedoms, we can have our lives. But it's accademic to talk about civil liberties if you don't talk about the true protection of all life. So if you protect liberty, you have to protect the life of the unborn just as well.

Now I have a bill, I have a bill in Congress which I would certainly promote and push in Congress as president. But it's been ignored basically by the Right to life community. and my bill is called the sanctity of life amendment or bill. And what it would do is it would establish principle that life begins at conception. Oh and somebody says "oh why are you saying that?" But that's not a political statement, that's a scientific statement that i'm making.

But something we could have done, and I know we're all interested in a better court system, and amending the constitution to protect life. but sometimes i think that is dismissing the way we can handle this much quicker. My bill, my bill what it does it removes the jurisdiction of the federal courts from the issue of abortion. If a state law says no abortion it doesn't go to the supreme court to be ruled out of order."

"1,191 delegates are needed to win. 1,142 delegates out of 2,380 have already been pledged. McCain is still over 600 delegates short. There are 22 states left to vote. The good news is that only three are winner take all (Virginia, D.C., and Vermont). That means the worst of the winner take all is over.The key is to stop McCain from hitting the magic number of 1,191. The Paul campaign knew this a long time ago. The Huckabee people are waking up to it. The Romney people had been hoping to avoid it, as they are better connected in the business and Mormon worlds than inside the Beltway, and I can see him dropping out when he gets tired of pouring more of his fortune into the race as he is rapidly running out of states where he has personal connections (Michigan, Massachusetts) or relatively high Mormon populations (Utah, Colorado, Nevada, North Dakota). In fact, the only state where he will be a lock is Idaho (in which Paul will also do quite well), and maybe Nebraska and South Dakota. He’ll probably spit the delegates pretty easily with the “big three” in Texas (where Paul will also be a factor), Ohio, possibly even North Carolina, and boy will everybody be giving a lot of attention to Pennsylvania when it rolls around. Oh, and I am forecasting that Romney drops out of the race (or at the very least does poorly in a brokered convention setting). So them who gets his delegates? Not Huckabee, and not McCain because both of them are anathema in the eyes of a Romney devotee, especially since the pair are perceived as conspiring against him. Plus to the degree that his delegates are Mormons, who are well known to be very libertarian leaning, Dr. Paul could really pull a shocker.Out of the winner take all states, McCain probably takes Vermont (17 delegates) and certainly D.C. (19 delegates). Virginia (63 delegates) is probable at this point, but not a lock. If the conservative vote coalesces around either Huckabee or Romney, things could break either way.The prospects get a little dimmer for McCain after the winner take all states. McCain can only win states that go blue in general elections for the most part. So he will probably do very well in Maryland, Rhode Island, Oregon, and Hawaii. In all likelihood he’ll win (but probably not as smashingly) New Mexico, Wisconsin, andHuckabee will certainly win Mississippi, and he has a good shot in Kentucky as well. After that the states he wins gets nebulous. This is good news for Paul, who has arguably underperformed in southern states. He’ll also do okay in Kansas, and could at least pull his proportional share in Texas, Nebraska (which is very Iowa-esque), Indiana, Ohio, and maybe North Carolina.*Ron Paul already has at least 42 delegates. We need to remain positive RIGHT AWAY so that he doesn’t lose traction in upcoming states very soon where he may pick up more (Washington, Louisiana, etc.)**IF WE CAN GET TO A BROKERED CONVENTION, ALL BETS ARE OFF!! Claro que o problema de alguns no Cato/Reason é que Ron Paul representa o renascer da "Old Right" e a materialização até de um certo Rothbardianismo (afinal, é o fundador do libertarianism como um sistema de ideias consistente, como o foi do Cato Institute e do Libertarian Party). Duas causas consideradas como fazendo apenas parte de segmentos ultra-minoritários. Weaver considered such atrocities as deeply "inimical to the foundations on which civilization is built."108

Via LRCBlog: Jan 27, 2008 (LBO) – Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul has slammed a US economic stimulus package based on tax-refunds and called for fiscal prudence and less Federal Reserve money printing, which caused the current turmoil in the first place.

Talking to Fox News television Paul asked where the money for the tax refunds - the cornerstone of the Bush administration stimulus package - was coming from.

"Where is the money coming from? We don't have any money over here in Washington," Paul told Fox News's Your World with Neil Cavuto.

"We have consumed everything we have gotten. So, we either have to borrow it from China or we print the money, which is inflationary. So, I'm opposed to that."

Paul says Federal Reserve moves to cut rates would further hurt the US dollar. Paul, a congressmen representing Texas, is also on the House Financial Services Committee and the Joint Economic Committee. He is a strong advocate of sound monetary policy.

The sub-prime bubble he points out was caused by rates as low as one percent maintained by the Fed under Alan Greenspan which led to reckless lending and a property bubble. Now the Fed was giving its own 'stimulus' by cutting rates.

"This is a bit of a fiction, too, because the problem comes from artificially low interest rates," he pointed out.

"And we can't solve the problems of a weak dollar by printing more dollars."

"So, I think the dollar is still going to remain under attack, because you can't solve the problem of too much credit stimulus by more credit stimulus, because it will just lead to a weaker dollar. And I think they [Fed] are between a rock and a hard place."(...)"

"With this victory, however, NATO's raison d'etre was destroyed. The alliance was created to defend against a Soviet system that as of 1991 had entirely ceased to exist. Rather than disbanding, though, NATO bureaucrats and the governments behind them reinvented the alliance and protected its existence by creating new dragons to slay. No longer was NATO to be an entirely defensive alliance. Rather, this ``new'' NATO began to occupy itself with a myriad of non-defense related issues like economic development and human rights. This was all codified at the Washington Summit of 1999, where the organization declared that it would concern itself with ``economic, social and political difficulties ..... ethnic and religious rivalries, territorial disputes, inadequate or failed efforts at reform, the abuse of human rights, and the dissolution of states.'' The new name of the NATO game was ``interventionism''; defense was now passé.
Nowhere was this ``new NATO'' more starkly in evidence than in Yugoslavia. There, in 1999, NATO became an aggressive military force, acting explicitly in violation of its own charter. By bombing Yugoslavia, a country that neither attacked nor threatened a NATO member state, NATO both turned its back on its stated purpose and relinquished the moral high ground it had for so long enjoyed. NATO intervention in the Balkan civil wars has not even produced the promised result: UN troops will be forced to remain in the Balkans indefinitely in an ultimately futile attempt to build nations against the will of those who will live in them.
Mr. Speaker, we are now called on to endorse the further expansion of a purposeless alliance and to grant $55.5 million dollars to former Soviet Bloc countries that have expressed an interest in joining it. While expanding NATO membership may be profitable for those companies that will be charged with upgrading the militaries of prospective members, this taxpayer subsidy of foreign governments and big business is not in the interest of the American people. It is past time for the Europeans to take responsibility for their own affairs, including their military affairs.
According to the Department of Defense's latest available figures, there are more than 250,000 U.S. military personnel deployed overseas on six continents in 141 nations. It is little wonder, then, that when a crisis hit our own shores--the treacherous attacks of September 11--we were forced to call on foreign countries to defend American airspace! Our military is spread so thin meddling in every corner of the globe, that defense of our own homeland is being carried out by foreigners.
Rather than offer our blessings and open our pocketbooks for the further expansion of NATO, the United States should get out of this outdated and interventionist organization. American foreign policy has been most successful when it focuses on the simple principles of friendship and trade with all countries and entangling alliances with none. "
